In a significant move, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during a single visit. This policy was activated starting November 5th, according to an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced widespread backlash for permitting the large-scale transaction to go through.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. However, the language has sparked debate due to its vagueness. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, since the limit is tied to individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to accumulate significant stocks over several hours.
The Reseller Crisis
To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the game's rising popularity.
Some resellers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, whereas some search for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases has been listed for over $800 on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the ongoing demand and potential scalper target.
With any luck, the retail limits will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and casual players as well.
