The golfing superstar hails BBC's top sports triumph with twin accolades.

Just prior to he was crowned, a trepidatious worry flashed through the golfer's mind. He revealed he was thinking, "Not an F1 driver again."

"It's been a fantastic night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was celebrated in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and perhaps we can use that."

On this occasion, however, there was no dramatic upset. The outcome was decisive, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to enjoy a memorable evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were honored as team of the year.

Constant Motion

Choosing not to celebrate at the official reception, McIlroy was already plotting his immediate plans. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.

"I've had a whirlwind 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Hunger for More

Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no intention to become complacent, notwithstanding securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a more to give in me," he asserted.

"More majors, tour championships, international events, that's the aim. But as long as you feel like you can keep progressing and have the hunger, that's the essential part."

Squad Celebration

Elsewhere, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the team award, also lauded golf's exceptional night and his pal's award.

"Those are the moments that will stay with us for all time so to get the public's recognition for that is really cool," he stated. "Witnessing it Rory pick that up, I think he deserves it so much."

After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Future Goals

His goal is to at last capture his maiden major next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to improve," he noted.

Football Loyalty

Prior to his departure, a last query came up. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be tempted to do it again after his recent triumphs?

"If they stop conceding multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a touch of positivity around."

Following a remarkable year, it's understandable that the champion golfer is looking on the positive aspects.
