The lineup for the second Ashes Test is yet to be decided just hours out from the opening delivery in the Gabba, with a final assessment of the Gabba pitch needed before the Australian selectors finalize a squad that could still include their captain.
Acting Captain Steve Smith Leaves Door Open for Surprise Recall
Vice-captain Steve Smith addressed an expectant media on the eve of the Test but was not disclosing the exact make-up of the lineup. However, he did not rule out a late inclusion for Pat Cummins, who was ruled out of the first Test due to a back injury.
“He has appeared very sharp to me, the way he’s been bowling in practice,” Smith said. “Of course games are different intensity, but he’s coming along well, he is aware of his condition.”
Late Inclusion Still a Live Option
The quick was originally omitted in Australia’s larger group for the Brisbane Test, but came along to the Gabba to continue his recovery with the team. Smith confirmed he was on the right track and may be called up at the last minute.
“The decision is pending but like I said, he’s close,” the captain added. “He’s done his work the past few days and we’ll see after three o’clock when we assess that surface whether he’s in contention or not.”
Selection Conundrums Loom if Cummins Plays
A recall for Cummins, which was in doubt just a few days ago, would result in Perth debutant Brendan Doggett or even spin veteran Nathan Lyon missing out.
Smith would not confirm Lyon’s place in the team when asked about the off-spinner’s inclusion.
“Undecided,” he replied. “We need to examine the surface as I said and sum things up from there. This is a ground Nathan has performed brilliantly in the history, he’s a top performer. We will consider the options and see how we go.”
Batsmen In Contention for Recall
The wicketkeeper-batter will also have to wait to learn whether he has been selected. The player is the prime option to be included in place of the unfit Usman Khawaja, with Travis Head likely to take the opening spot again after his heroics in the first Test.
“A heap of things are being discussed,” Smith said. “It's a matter of waiting what the wicket is like and from there we’ll finalize a playing XI.”
“[Inglis] is obviously a very aggressive player,” Smith added. “Impressed on his debut in Sri Lanka, he’s been in really good form... He faces quicks very well. So if he gets the nod I’m sure he’ll excel for us.”
Final Call Pending
Along with Inglis, Beau Webster is in contention to be selected at No 6, on the expectation that Head opens the batting alongside the other opener, and Cam Green shifts to No 5.
Smith indicated a official announcement on the team might come later on Wednesday, but alternatively, it may wait until the Thursday. The Test starts at the Brisbane Cricket Ground at 2pm local time (1500 AEDT) on Thursday.
