Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's daring critique examines the demanding standards for women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. The Woman in Cabin 10
This classic whodunit story features Keira Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a break from writing about international wars to embark on a high-end voyage accompanied by a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her husband, as well as other filthy rich individuals. Yet once an enigmatic female disappears from the ship overnight and the entire crew claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Out now, on Netflix
This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills in this clever supernatural story filmed completely from the perspective of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like protective of her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He portrays an egotistical celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to appear at a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy superfan Javi. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has rendered the local kids on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. But the old telephone in the room repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in this director's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple begin monetising the American public's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet Jessica Chastain manages to depict Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4
This Espionage Thriller
This period's additional entry from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to discover a mole among the team from five suspects – among them is his spouse. The two stars are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mental battle of truth or lie takes place. Additional actors take part the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, various showings, the Sky channel
