Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
