Australian gloveman Alex Carey admitted he believed he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on Decision Review System during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test against England.
Having been given a life on 72, Carey crafted a excellent 106 to aid the home side finish on 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.
What happened?
Australia were 245-6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to the bowling of Josh Tongue.
The England team were convinced they had a wicket, certain they had heard an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.
After captain Ben Stokes opted to review the on-field call, the footage examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a significant spike although this came prior to the ball had passed the bat.
Gaffaney added he was of the opinion there was a gap between bat and ball.
Therefore, Carey was allowed to continue.
"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.
"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. There was a definite noise."
Ongoing Scrutiny
Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a series of inconclusive moments.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated England may escalate this most recent incident further with the match official Jeff Crowe.
"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.
"It's been a worry for us all series long. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. That's the situation."
Personal Milestone
Carey's century was his maiden in the Ashes.
It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was in tears in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by looking to the skies.
"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," said Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. It was a fantastic feeling."
History of Controversy
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, leading to a heated final day.
Speaking about his survival he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."
"I might have gotten away with one."
