Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
