Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
