A minimum of 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
